Is my phone compatible?
To use Re-sim your device must support eSIM and must not be locked to a mobile operator. Here's how to check.
Compatibility depends on the exact device
The same model can differ by country of sale, operator variant and software version. Use the checks below on your own phone; the list further down is general guidance and isn't a guarantee.
Check your phone
Check an iPhone
- Open Settings → General → About.
- Scroll down. If you see an EID number, your iPhone has an eSIM.
- Then check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock, which should say “No SIM restrictions”.
Check an Android
- Dial *#06#. On many phones an EID appears if eSIM is supported.
- Or open Settings → About phone (or Network & internet → SIMs) and look for EID or “Add eSIM”.
- Ask your operator whether the phone is unlocked if you bought it on a contract or plan.
Devices that commonly support eSIM
| Brand | Models | Exceptions and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple iPhone | iPhone XR, XS and XS Max, and all later models, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). | iPhones sold in mainland China generally don't support eSIM (some models from Hong Kong and Macao do). iPhone 14 and later bought in the US have no physical SIM slot. |
| Google Pixel | Pixel 3 and later, including the a-series from Pixel 3a onward. | Some Pixel 3 units sold through certain operators or regions don't support eSIM. |
| Samsung Galaxy | Many recent S-series (from S20), Z Fold and Z Flip models, and selected A-series models. | eSIM support varies by country and operator variant of the same model. Check your exact model number. |
| Other Android phones | Selected recent models from Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, Sony, Huawei and others. | Support differs widely by model and region. Use the EID check below. |
| Tablets and laptops | Some cellular iPads and Windows laptops with LTE/5G modems support eSIM. | A data-only travel eSIM can work on these, but check the device's cellular settings for an eSIM option first. |
Carrier-locked phones
Phones bought on a contract or from an operator are sometimes locked to that operator's network. A locked phone may let you install an eSIM but refuse to connect with it. Ask your operator to unlock the phone before you travel; this can take several days.
